Window shapes and placement.
A window can be almost any shape — rectangle, circle, arch, a cut-out of your logo — and can sit on the front, top or wrap around a corner. Placement should follow the product, not the other way round:
- Show the best part. A cupcake’s frosting, a soap’s swirl, a toy’s face.
- Keep structure. Windows weaken panels; we keep at least about 1/2 in of board around the window and away from folds.
- Avoid grease. On food boxes, keep windows away from areas oil can reach — see bakery boxes.
- Mind the label. Don’t put a window where legally required copy needs to go.
Window box specifications.
Windows and recyclability.
Most curbside recycling programs accept paperboard boxes with small film windows, but large windows or laminated films can be a problem. If recyclability is important to your brand, consider:
- a smaller window or an open die-cut window with no film (for products that don’t need dust protection);
- plant-based cellulose film, which is compostable in some systems;
- a printed note telling customers to remove the window film before recycling.
Be careful with recyclability claims on the box itself — since October 4, 2026, California restricts recycling symbols and “recyclable” claims to materials that meet state criteria. See eco-friendly boxes.
Window options compared.
| Option | Look | Recyclability |
|---|---|---|
| Open die-cut window | Product visible, no film | Fully paper |
| PET film patch | Clear, crisp, protects product | Film should be removed for recycling |
| Cellulose (plant-based) film | Clear, slightly softer look | Paper-based film; check local programs |
| Window with printed frame | Window shape is part of the design | Depends on film |
Frequently asked questions
Can a window be any shape?
Yes. Windows can be rectangles, circles, arches or custom shapes such as your logo, as long as enough board remains for strength.
What film is used for windows?
Clear PET is standard; anti-fog PET suits chilled foods, and plant-based cellulose or PLA film is available for brands avoiding conventional plastic.
Are window boxes food-safe?
With food-contact board and film, yes — popular for bakery and confectionery.
Can I have a window without film?
Yes, an open die-cut window is possible for products that do not need protection from dust or handling.
Do windows make boxes harder to recycle?
Small film windows are usually accepted, but large or laminated windows can be an issue. Plant-based films or open windows help.
Can the window be any shape?
Yes, windows can be die-cut to custom shapes, within a safe distance of folds and edges.
