Regulation

A fast-changing category: know the 2026 rule change.

The federal definition of hemp is changing. The FY2026 Agriculture Appropriations Act redefines hemp around total THC rather than delta-9 THC alone, and sets a limit for final hemp-derived cannabinoid products of 0.4 mg of combined total THC (and similar cannabinoids) per container. The law (P.L. 119-37) originally set November 12, 2026 as the effective date; a September 2026 continuing resolution (P.L. 119-103) pushed parts of the new definition back to December 11, 2026, while the exclusion of synthetic cannabinoids still starts November 12. Further delays and repeal bills are pending in Congress, so check the current status before you print. Non-intoxicating CBD products are intended to remain lawful, but some full-spectrum products may exceed the new limits, and federal agencies are still defining details such as what counts as a “container”.

What that means for packaging:

  • Plan for label changes. Many brands are reformulating or relabeling. Order packaging in quantities you’re confident you’ll use under the new rules, or use a printed carton with a separate product label for flexibility.
  • Keep claims clean. The FDA has repeatedly warned CBD companies about disease and treatment claims. Packaging copy should describe the product, not promise outcomes.
  • Make the COA easy to find. A QR code linking to the batch’s certificate of analysis is now standard practice and builds trust.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your products and copy with counsel familiar with hemp and cannabinoid law in the states you sell in.

Design

Design that reads as trustworthy.

CBD shoppers are cautious, and design signals quality. Brands that do well tend to follow a few rules:

  • Clinical clarity over cannabis clichés. Clean typography, generous white space and a clear statement of what’s inside (e.g. “1,000 mg CBD per 30 mL bottle”) build more trust than leaf graphics.
  • One hero number. Make the cannabinoid content easy to find on the front panel.
  • Back panel hierarchy. Serving size, servings per container, ingredients, batch and QR code in a consistent position across your range.
  • Variant colors. A distinct color per strength or formula reduces wrong purchases.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size box do I need for a 30 mL tincture?

A standard 30 mL (1 oz) Boston round dropper bottle usually fits a carton around 1.5 × 1.5 × 4.5 inches inside, depending on the dropper height. Send your bottle for an exact fit.

How does the 2026 hemp rule change affect my boxes?

The new federal definition limits final hemp-derived cannabinoid products to 0.4 mg of combined total THC per container. Parts of it were delayed to December 11, 2026, and more changes are pending in Congress. If your product or label may change, order packaging in smaller runs and confirm compliance with counsel.

Can you add a QR code for my certificate of analysis?

Yes. We place QR codes at a scannable size, usually on the back or side panel, and can leave a blank area for batch-specific labels.

Do CBD boxes need to be child-resistant?

It depends on the product and the state. Some states require child-resistant packaging for certain hemp or cannabinoid products. Check your state rules; we can supply child-resistant structures where needed.

Can I print different strengths in one order?

Yes. Several designs that share a carton size can be printed in the same run.
