Direct contact or not? Start with that question.
The most important food-packaging decision isn’t the color — it’s whether the food touches the board.
- Direct contact (a cookie sitting on the box floor, fries in a scoop, a sandwich in a wedge box) needs board, coatings and inks suitable for food contact. In the US, paper and paperboard used for food contact is covered by FDA regulations such as 21 CFR 176.170 (aqueous and fatty foods) and 176.180 (dry foods).
- Indirect contact (a wrapped bar, a bagged snack, a jar inside a carton) gives you more freedom with board and finishes, because the primary packaging is the barrier.
Tell us which applies on your quote. We’ll specify food-contact board and, where needed, a liner or barrier coating — and we can supply material documentation for your records.
Grease, moisture and temperature
Oily, fried and buttery foods soak through plain board and leave stains. Options include grease-resistant coated board, a printed liner, or a glassine or parchment insert. For chilled and frozen products, ask for moisture-resistant coatings so the board doesn’t soften from condensation.
PFAS, allergens and the label.
PFAS. Grease resistance used to come from PFAS (“forever chemicals”). In February 2024 the FDA announced that grease-proofing substances containing PFAS are no longer being sold for food-contact use in the US, and a growing list of states — including California, New York, Washington, Colorado, Minnesota and others — ban intentionally added PFAS in food packaging. Ask us for PFAS-free grease-resistant board and we’ll confirm it in writing.
Allergens. Packaged foods must declare major allergens. Since the FASTER Act, sesame joined milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans as the ninth major allergen. Make sure your panel layout has room for the “Contains:” statement or the ingredient list where allergens are named.
Nutrition Facts. Many packaged foods need a Nutrition Facts panel; some small businesses qualify for exemptions. Your food regulatory adviser or state cottage-food rules will tell you what applies — we’ll make sure the panel fits.

Frequently asked questions
Are your food boxes food-safe?
We specify food-contact board and coatings for any box where food touches the packaging, and can supply material documentation. Tell us whether contact is direct or indirect when you request a quote.
Do you offer PFAS-free grease-resistant packaging?
Yes, PFAS-free grease-resistant board is available and is the default we recommend for oily foods. We will confirm the material in writing on request.
Can food boxes have a window?
Yes. A window film lets customers see the product. We place windows away from areas where grease would collect.
Can you print allergen and nutrition panels?
Yes. Send us the finished panel artwork or text and we will place it at a legible size. The content must come from your own food labeling review.
Can food boxes be recycled?
Clean paperboard and corrugated boxes are widely recyclable. Heavily food-soiled boxes may not be accepted by local programs, which is worth noting on the box.
Need food packaging that holds up?
Tell us the food, whether it touches the box and how it is served or shipped. We’ll specify the board and coating.
