Protection

Protecting chocolate on the way to the customer.

Chocolate is fragile in two ways: it breaks, and it blooms. Packaging helps with both.

  • Breakage. Truffles and bonbons need a cavity tray so each piece sits apart; bars need a snug sleeve or carton so they can’t flex.
  • Bloom. Temperature swings make cocoa butter or sugar rise to the surface as a white haze. Packaging can’t replace temperature control, but a well-fitting box with an inner wrap or liner slows the effect. Chocolate keeps best around 60–68°F; in summer, shippers often add insulation and cold packs.
  • Odor. Chocolate absorbs smells easily. Use food-contact board with low-odor inks and coatings, and keep pieces in a primary wrap or tray.

Design

Design notes from the confectionery aisle.

  • Show the craft. A window or a lid that reveals the arrangement sells hand-finished pieces better than a photo.
  • Bar sleeves are your billboard. A printed sleeve over a foil-wrapped tablet is cost-effective and easy to change for limited flavours.
  • Make allergens obvious. Nuts, milk and soy are common in chocolate; keep the allergen statement easy to find on the back panel.
  • Seasonal ranges. Use one structural size with seasonal sleeves for Valentine’s, Easter and the holidays to keep die costs low.
Sizes

Chocolate box sizes and inserts.

Format Typical configuration
Bar sleeve or wrapper box Fits a standard bar, e.g. about 6.5 × 3 × 0.5 in
4-piece box 2 × 2 cavity insert
9-piece box 3 × 3 cavity insert
16-piece box 4 × 4 cavity insert, often two layers
Truffle box Round cavities, deeper insert

Cavity inserts are commonly food-safe plastic or molded pulp; card dividers work for wrapped pieces.

Care

Protecting chocolate in transit.

Chocolate is sensitive to heat, odor and moisture. Keep it away from strongly scented packaging materials, use food-contact board for direct contact, and in warm months ship in insulated packaging with cold packs. A snug insert prevents pieces scuffing against each other.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are your chocolate boxes food-safe?

Yes. We use food-contact board and can add a food-safe liner or cavity tray when chocolate touches the packaging.

Can you make boxes with truffle inserts?

Yes. Cavity trays are sized to your pieces in card or food-safe plastic, for 2 to 36 pieces or more.

Do you make chocolate bar wrappers and sleeves?

Yes. Printed sleeves and cartons for bars are available, typically used over an inner foil or paper wrap.

How do I stop chocolate blooming in shipping?

Bloom is caused by temperature swings. Store and ship cool (around 60–68°F), use an inner wrap and a well-fitting box, and add insulation and cold packs for warm-weather shipping.

Can I get seasonal sleeves for the same box?

Yes. Using one box size with interchangeable printed sleeves keeps costs down across seasonal ranges.

Can chocolate touch the printed box?

Use food-contact board or a liner where chocolate touches the box. Printed surfaces are kept on the outside.
