Lid depth and neck options.
| Option | What it looks like | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Full telescope lid | Lid covers the whole base | Maximum strength and a clean, monolithic look |
| Partial lid | Lid covers part of the base, showing a band of the base color | The most common style; lets you contrast lid and base |
| Shoulder neck | A neck inside the base raises the lid, leaving a visible “shoulder” | Luxury fragrance, watches and jewelry; the lid sits flush |
| Lid with thumb cut | Semicircle cut in the base to grip the lid | Snug lids that would otherwise be hard to lift |
A two-piece lid fitted too tightly traps air and resists opening; too loose and the box looks cheap. We set the fit for the board thickness and wrap paper you choose.

Rigid or paperboard two-piece?
Rigid two-piece boxes are made from thick grayboard wrapped in printed paper. They don’t flex, they feel substantial, and customers keep them. They ship assembled, so they take more space in freight and storage.
Paperboard two-piece boxes fold up from flat blanks. They cost less, ship flat and still look neat — a good choice for apparel, bakery and higher-volume retail lines where the box isn’t kept.
If you love the rigid look but need flat shipping, ask about folding rigid boxes, which collapse flat and snap into shape.
Two-piece box variations.
| Variation | Description |
|---|---|
| Full telescope lid | Lid covers the full depth of the base |
| Partial lid | Lid covers part of the base, showing a band of the base |
| Shoulder (neck) box | A raised inner collar the lid rests on — very premium |
| Lid with window | Shows the product without opening |
| Collapsible two-piece | Ships flat, assembles in seconds |
Frequently asked questions
What is a two-piece box?
A box made of two separate parts: a base and a lid that lifts off. It is one of the most common gift and retail packaging formats.
Should my lid cover the whole base?
Full-depth lids are strongest and most minimal; partial lids show a band of the base, which many brands use for contrast. Shoulder-neck boxes create a flush, luxury look.
Are two-piece boxes good for shipping?
Rigid two-piece boxes protect contents well but should travel inside a mailer or shipping box so the wrap is not scuffed.
What is the minimum order?
Rigid two-piece boxes start at 100 units; paperboard versions start at 50.
Can I add a ribbon to a two-piece box?
Yes — ribbon pulls on the base or ribbon ties around the box are available.
Can the lid and base be different colors?
Yes, lid and base can be wrapped in different papers or printed differently.
