Two ways to make a black box.
Printed black. White board printed with a heavy black ink layer (often a “rich black” of CMYK). Flexible and economical, but the cut edges and inside show white, and scuffs can reveal the board underneath.
Black-through board or paper. The board or wrap is dyed black throughout, so edges and scuffs stay black. Preferred for rigid boxes and premium cartons; decorated with foil, white ink or spot UV rather than CMYK.
For mailers, black kraft corrugated is another option with a matte, natural texture.
Black box options.
Getting black right.
- Fingerprints. Gloss black shows every touch. Soft-touch or matte lamination hides them and feels better.
- Scuffing. Black boxes show rub marks in transit. Ship premium black boxes inside a mailer, and choose black-through materials where possible.
- Tone-on-tone. A spot UV or black-foil logo on soft-touch black is subtle and very premium — visible only when the light catches it.
- Contrast. Silver foil reads as tech and modern; gold reads as luxury and heritage; white ink reads as clean and minimal.
Black box ideas by industry.
- Tech and electronics: black mailer with a silver foil logo and printed inside.
- Fashion and accessories: soft-touch black two-piece box with tone-on-tone spot UV.
- Spirits and gifts: black rigid magnetic box with gold foil and a custom insert.
- Cosmetics: black tuck end cartons with white ink and a single metallic accent.
Artwork tips for black packaging.
Set large black areas as rich black (for example 60/40/40/100 CMYK) for depth, but keep small text in 100% K only so it stays sharp. Avoid thin white reversed text below about 8 pt; it can fill in. For foil on black, keep fine lines at least 0.5 pt so they stamp cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Do black boxes show scratches?
Printed black can show scuffs and white edges. Black-through board or wrap and a soft-touch or matte lamination reduce this significantly.
What finish works best on black boxes?
Soft-touch lamination is the most popular: it feels velvety and hides fingerprints. Pair it with spot UV or foil for the logo.
Can you print white on black boxes?
Yes. White ink prints on black board and is a clean, minimal alternative to foil.
What is rich black?
A printed black made from all four CMYK inks for a deeper tone than black ink alone. It is used for large solid areas, not small text.
Are black boxes recyclable?
Black paperboard is recyclable; plastic laminations can affect recyclability in some programs.
What is the minimum for black boxes?
Printed black styles start at 50 units; black rigid boxes start at 100.
