Sizing

Sizing bakery boxes for real bakes.

Bakery boxes go wrong on height more often than width. Frosting swirls, toppers and tall slices need clearance, and the lid has to close without touching the decoration.

Product Typical inside size Notes
4 standard cupcakes 7 × 7 × 4 in Insert with 2⅝–2¾ in holes for standard liners
6 standard cupcakes 10 × 7 × 4 in Allow 4 in height for piped frosting
12 cookies (3 in) 9 × 9 × 2 in Glassine or parchment liner for butter cookies
8 in round cake 10 × 10 × 5 in Add height for toppers; use a cake board
6 macarons 6 × 2 × 2 in Tray insert stops them rolling
6 donuts 10 × 7 × 3 in Grease-resistant board recommended

These are starting points. Measure your own bakes — especially height — and we’ll size the box and insert to match.

Practical tips

Keeping bakes fresh and presentable.

  • Grease spots are the most common complaint. Butter-rich cookies, croissants and donuts need grease-resistant board or a liner. Since the FDA’s 2024 announcement on PFAS grease-proofers and several state bans, ask for PFAS-free options — we’ll confirm the material.
  • Condensation forms when warm bakes are boxed straight from the oven. Let bakes cool, or ask about a small vent cut in the lid.
  • Sliding ruins frosting. A card insert costs little and holds cupcakes upright.
  • Delivery. For bakes that travel by car or courier, a corrugated cake box with a lock-corner base is far more stable than a folding carton.

Selling at markets or through a cottage-food license? Check your state’s labeling rules for home-based bakers — many require your name, address and an ingredient list on the package.

Sizes

Sizing bakery boxes.

Item Common box size (L × W × D)
Single cupcake 4 × 4 × 4 in
4 cupcakes 8 × 8 × 4 in (with insert)
6 cupcakes 10 × 7 × 4 in (with insert)
12 cupcakes 14 × 10 × 4 in (with insert)
8 in cake 10 × 10 × 5 in
10 in cake 12 × 12 × 6 in
Half-dozen cookies 6 × 6 × 2 in
Pie 10 × 10 × 3 in

Allow at least an inch of clearance around and above frosted cakes so decorations don’t touch the lid.

Safety

Keeping bakery boxes clean and safe.

  • Grease resistance: use grease-resistant food-contact board or a liner for buttery items. Since the FDA announced in 2024 that PFAS-based grease-proofing agents are no longer being sold for food-contact use in the US, and a growing list of states ban intentionally added PFAS in food packaging, ask for PFAS-free grease resistance.
  • Windows: a window shows the product without opening the box; see window boxes.
  • Allergens: if the box carries ingredient information for packaged goods, list major allergens including sesame.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size box do I need for cupcakes?

For four standard cupcakes, about 7 × 7 × 4 inches with an insert; for six, about 10 × 7 × 4 inches. Jumbo cupcakes and tall frosting need more height — measure your bakes and we will size the insert.

Are your bakery boxes food-safe?

Yes, we use food-contact board for bakery boxes and can supply material documentation. Grease-resistant, PFAS-free board is available for buttery bakes.

Can I get boxes with a window?

Yes. Lid windows are the most popular bakery option, with film in PET or plant-based material.

Can you print on kraft for a rustic look?

Yes. Kraft bakery boxes with one- or two-color printing are popular with artisan bakeries. Light colors print best on white board.

Do bakery boxes come flat?

Yes, they ship flat and fold together quickly. Lock-corner cake boxes assemble without glue or tape.
