Sustainability

Sustainability without the greenwash.

The most sustainable box is the right-sized one, in paper, with as little plastic and ink as the job allows. Here’s how we help brands get there — and what we won’t claim.

  • Right-sizing on every project
  • Paper-based, plastic-free options
  • Claims backed by documentation

Approach

Our approach.

  1. Right-size first. Every quote starts with the product dimensions. A smaller box uses less board, less void fill and less fuel — and lowers your dimensional-weight shipping cost.
  2. Paper-based by default. Paperboard and corrugated are among the most widely recycled packaging materials in the US.
  3. Plastic-free options. Aqueous coatings instead of film lamination, open windows or cellulose film instead of PET, card and molded-pulp inserts instead of foam.
  4. Recycled content where it fits. Recycled kraft, corrugated and paperboard are available on many builds.
  5. Honest claims. We tell you what your box is made of so your claims match reality.
Compliance

The rules around green claims.

  • FTC Green Guides require environmental claims to be specific and substantiated. Unqualified “recyclable” claims need recycling access for a substantial majority of consumers where the product is sold.
  • California SB 343 restricts the chasing-arrows symbol and recyclability claims to materials that meet CalRecycle’s criteria, for products made on or after October 4, 2026 (a federal court has paused Attorney General enforcement of parts of the law while litigation continues; the compliance date stands).
  • State PFAS laws in a growing number of states ban intentionally added PFAS in food packaging — relevant if your box touches food. See food boxes.
  • Certifications such as FSC® may only be used when the packaging is certified through the chain of custody.

Practical

Small changes with real impact.

Change Effect
Reduce box by 1 inch in each dimension Less board, often lower DIM weight
Replace plastic lamination with aqueous Easier to recycle, similar scuff protection on many builds
Replace foam insert with card or pulp Mono-material box, curbside recyclable
Switch from tape to tuck-lock closure No plastic tape; faster packing
Print 1–2 colors on kraft Less ink, natural look
Questions

Questions to ask about any “sustainable” box.

  1. What is the board, and how much recycled content does it contain?
  2. Is there any plastic — lamination, window film, foam, tape?
  3. Is the box right-sized for the product?
  4. Can the claims printed on it be substantiated?
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are your boxes recyclable?

Paper-based boxes without plastic laminates, foam or large plastic windows are widely recyclable in the US. We will recommend a build that stays recyclable.

Do you offer FSC-certified packaging?

Ask your specialist about certified fiber availability for your build. Certification marks are only printed when the packaging is certified through the supply chain.

What is the most sustainable box?

A right-sized, uncoated recycled kraft or corrugated box with minimal ink and a paper insert.

Make your next box lower-impact.

We’ll suggest changes that cut material and plastic without losing protection.
