Design

What beauty buyers notice first.

In beauty, packaging is judged before the product. Shoppers pick up a carton, feel the coating, turn it over and read the back panel — so the tactile details and the information hierarchy matter as much as the front design.

  • Feel. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvety, premium hand-feel and hides fingerprints. Gloss reads as bold and playful. Matte aqueous is the clean, budget-friendly middle.
  • Color accuracy. Brand colors — especially pastels and nudes — drift easily on press. Give us Pantone references and we’ll run them as spot colors on offset jobs.
  • Fit. A serum bottle that slides around the carton feels cheap. We size cartons to the bottle with the dropper or pump fitted, and add a card insert for anything that tapers.
  • Shelf facing. Most cosmetic cartons are tall and narrow; put the product name on the narrow side panels too, because many retailers face them sideways.

Compliance

Label copy to plan for — before the design starts.

Cosmetics sold in the US must follow FDA labeling rules, and the outer carton is usually where they live. This isn’t legal advice — confirm the details with your regulatory adviser — but these are the elements to leave room for:

  • Principal display panel (front): the product identity (what it is) and the net quantity of contents, shown in both US customary and metric units (for example “1 fl oz (30 mL)”).
  • Ingredient declaration: listed in descending order of predominance on an information panel, typically the back.
  • Name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer or distributor.
  • MoCRA contact information: since December 29, 2024, cosmetic labels must include a domestic address, phone number or electronic contact (such as a website) for adverse event reports.
  • Warnings and directions where they apply, and any professional-use-only statement.

Small cartons fill up fast. Tell us which copy has to appear and we’ll check the panel sizes can carry it at a legible type size before you approve the proof.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best material for cosmetic boxes?

Solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard at 16–24pt is the industry standard for cartons because it prints sharply and folds cleanly. Rigid grayboard is used for gift sets and fragrance.

Can you make boxes for lipsticks and small items?

Yes. Small tuck end cartons, lipstick sleeves and multi-cavity inserts for minis are all made to size. Very small boxes may need a minimum panel size to fit required copy.

Do you offer soft-touch lamination?

Yes — soft-touch is one of our most requested beauty finishes. It pairs well with foil or spot UV on the logo.

Can you help with cosmetic label layout?

We will lay out the panels and check that your supplied copy fits at a legible size. The wording itself should come from your formulator or regulatory adviser.

Can I get a mix of SKUs in one order?

Yes. If several products share a carton size, different designs can be printed in the same run to keep costs down.

Launching or refreshing a beauty line?

Send us your bottle or jar dimensions and SKUs. We’ll come back with a carton spec, a 3D proof and tiered pricing.
