How metallic and holographic boards work.
These boards are paperboard laminated with a thin metallized layer — silver, gold or a holographic pattern that diffracts light into rainbows. The magic is in the white ink:
- Print without white and colors become metallic: a cyan over silver board looks like metallic blue.
- Print with white underneath and colors become solid and opaque, blocking the shine.
- Mix the two to make a logo or pattern flash while the rest of the box stays matte.
This is often more striking — and cheaper at volume — than covering the box with foil stamping.

Use the shine with intent.
Full-coverage holographic packaging can look striking in a photo and busy on a shelf. Brands that use it well usually do one of two things: keep the box minimal and let the board itself be the design, or use white ink to confine the shine to the logo and a few accents. Pair with a matte or soft-touch overlay to make the reflective areas pop by contrast.
Note that metallized boards are harder to recycle than plain paperboard — if sustainability is a core message, consider foil stamping on a recyclable board for just the logo.
Designs that suit metallic boards.
- Minimal brands: a metallic board with a single-color logo can look more premium than full print.
- Holiday and limited editions: shimmer marks a special edition without changing the structure.
- Tech accessories: silver boards with black or white print read as precise and modern.
- Cosmetics and fragrance: iridescent boards suit bold beauty brands.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between holographic board and foil stamping?
Holographic board has the metallic layer across the whole sheet, and printing controls where it shows. Foil stamping applies metallic foil only to specific areas, such as a logo.
Can you print colors on holographic boxes?
Yes. Colors printed without white ink look metallic; with white ink underneath they look solid.
Are holographic boxes recyclable?
Metallized boards are less recyclable than plain paperboard in many programs. For a recyclable alternative, use foil stamping on standard board.
What is the minimum order?
Holographic and metallic boards start at 100 units.
Can rigid boxes be holographic?
Yes, rigid boxes can be wrapped in holographic or metallic papers.
Do metallic boards cost more?
Yes, metallized boards cost more than standard SBS, but can replace full-coverage foil.
Does holographic board work on mailers?
Holographic boards are usually paperboard; for mailers we can laminate a printed holographic sheet to corrugated board.
