Rigid or paperboard drawer box?
Rigid drawer boxes use wrapped grayboard for both the sleeve and the tray. The tray glides out smoothly and the box feels like a keepsake — ideal for jewelry, watches, luxury chocolates and gift sets.
Paperboard drawer boxes fold up from flat blanks. They’re lighter and much cheaper, suiting soaps, tea, socks, cosmetics and party favors.
Child-resistant drawer boxes add a locking tab that must be pressed while sliding the tray. Used for cannabis, some CBD products and other regulated categories; see cannabis packaging for testing requirements.

Small details that make drawers feel premium.
- Contrast the tray. A colored tray inside a neutral sleeve (or the reverse) makes the reveal visible.
- Print the tray floor. A message or pattern that appears as the tray slides out costs little and gets photographed.
- Mind the friction. We set the gap between sleeve and tray for the wrap thickness so the tray doesn’t stick or fall out.
- Think about orientation. Decide which end the tray slides out of and put the logo on the sleeve so it reads correctly from that side.
Drawer box construction.
A drawer box has two parts: an outer sleeve and an inner tray that slides out. Both can be rigid grayboard for luxury, or paperboard for lower cost.
| Part | Options |
|---|---|
| Sleeve | Rigid wrapped grayboard or 18–24pt paperboard; open both ends or one |
| Tray | Rigid or paperboard; printed inside or plain |
| Pull | Ribbon tab, thumb cut-out or printed tab |
| Insert | Foam, card, satin or molded pulp |
Where drawer boxes work best.
Jewelry, watches, small electronics, tea and chocolate, stationery and premium accessories. The slide-out motion slows down the unboxing, which makes it feel more considered. For heavy products, choose a rigid tray and a ribbon pull so the tray slides smoothly.
